Remembering Our Newfoundland Mercy Story 12:
Sister Mary Philippa Hanley

Bedelia Josephine Hanley, having arrived in St. John’s from Ireland in the summer of 1885 to enter the Sisters of Mercy, was received into the novitiate as Sister Mary Philippa Joseph in March of 1886.

She spent the early years of her religious life at St. Michael’s Convent, Belvedere and in 1904 was assigned to St. Bride’s Academy, teaching student teachers and senior students. Four years later she was transferred to Sacred Heart Convent in St. Lawrence, where she endeared herself to both students and parents. Upon her return to Belvedere in 1910 she took on the responsibilities of superior and novice mistress.

When the Convents of Mercy in Newfoundland amalgamated in 1916, Archbishop P.J. Roche appointed the first General Council of the new Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of Newfoundland for a three-year period. Sister M. Philippa was a memberof that first Council and in 1919 was elected to the position. When Sister M. Bridget O’Connor became ineligible for re-election in 1925, Sister M. Philippa was unanimously elected Mother General. One of the first tasks of her Council was the formal petitioning to the Holy See for the new Rule and Constitutions, a task that involved very tedious researching and collating of the necessary documentation. Approval from Rome came in 1930.

In 1917 Sister M. Philippa’s Council opened two new foundations – Holy Name of Mary Convent in Marystown and Immaculate Conception Convent on Bell Island. When she had completed two terms of office, Sister M. Philippa began serious work on a project dear to her heart – writing the history of the Congregation for the 1842 centennial year. Illness prevented her from completing this work, but in the Archives of the Sisters of Mercy of Newfoundland there are notations compiled by her on the foundations made from 1842 to 1922. Several of her letters are also preserved in our Archives.

This cultured and learned woman is remembered for her natural amiability, artistic skill, literary talent, administrative abilities and her dedicated service to the Congregation.  She died at Belvedere on November 4, 1941 at the age of seventy-five years.

Cuando terminó sus dos mandatos, Sor M. Philippa empezó a trabajar seriamente en un proyecto muy querido para ella: escribir la historia de la Congregación para el centenario de 1842. La enfermedad le impidió terminar este trabajo, pero en los Archivos de las Hermanas de la Misericordia de Terranova hay anotaciones compiladas por ella sobre las fundaciones realizadas desde 1842 hasta 1922. Women of the Bible

On October 29, 2023, ten women gathered at the Basilica in St. John’s, Newfoundland, to present stories of our biblical ancestors.  Through these ten stories from biblical times, researched and written by the actresses themselves, we were called to celebrate women before us, to walk in sacred footprints and to realize new dreams and ambitions.  

An atmosphere for personal reflection was created after each story by having the music of two harpists (Vicki Greenslade and Alexa Laurie). The harp is an instrument so representative of biblical times.  In creating the reality of their existence, each woman’s attire was enhanced through professionally selected and tailored fabrics most resembling biblical times.

The stories told were Mary, the wife of Clophas (Dianne O’Mara), Sarah (Kim Kelly), Shiphrah the Midwife (Karen Stillman), the Woman at the Well (Sister Mary Rossiter, PBVM), the Women at the Eighth Station (Ann Walsh, Sister Eileen Penney, RSM, and Lesya Danchyshyn), Lydia of the Purple Dye Trade (Patricia Snook-Reid), Miriam, the Sister of Moses (Sister Margie Taylor, RSM) and Ruth (Kay Barrington) who was also the director.

We are drawn to a story with the promise of finding a different world, finding another time and finding ourselves.  As the storytelling finished, Sister Margie prayed that there may always be “once upon a time” moments in our lives so that our stories can continue for generations to come, as ones filled with the biblical threads of courage, faith, love and forgiveness.

El 29 de octubre de 2023, diez mujeres se reunieron en la Basílica de San Juan de Terranova para presentar historias de nuestras antepasadas bíblicas. A través de estas diez historias de tiempos bíblicos, investigadas y escritas por las propias actrices, fuimos llamadas a celebrar a las mujeres que nos precedieron, a caminar sobre huellas sagradas y a realizar nuevos sueños y ambiciones.

Después de cada historia se creó una atmósfera de reflexión personal con la música de dos arpistas (Vicki Greenslade y Alexa Laurie). El arpa es un instrumento tan representativo de los tiempos bíblicos. Para crear la realidad de su existencia, se realzó el atuendo de cada mujer mediante telas seleccionadas y confeccionadas profesionalmente que más se asemejaban a los tiempos bíblicos.

Las historias contadas fueron María, la esposa de Cleofás (Dianne O’Mara), Sara (Kim Kelly), Sifra la Partera (Karen Stillman), la Mujer en el Pozo (Hermana Mary Rossiter, PBVM), las Mujeres en la Octava Estación (Ann Walsh, Hermana Eileen Penney, RSM, y Lesya Danchyshyn), Lydia, la del Tinte Púrpura (Patricia Snook-Reid), Miriam, la Hermana de Moisés (Hermana Margie Taylor, RSM) y Ruth (Kay Barrington) que también fue la directora.

Nos sentimos atraídos por una historia con la promesa de encontrar un mundo diferente, encontrar otro tiempo y encontrarnos a nosotros mismos. Al final de la narración, la Hermana Margie rezó para que siempre haya momentos “érase una vez” en nuestras vidas, de modo que nuestras historias puedan continuar para las generaciones venideras, llenas de los hilos bíblicos del valor, la fe, el amor y el perdón.

Mercy Representation at the Synod

There are two Mercy Sister delegates at the Synod Assembly: Sister Elizabeth Davis, a representative of UISG, and Sister Angela Perez from Guam who is a representative of Oceania.

Sister Elizabeth shared her hopes for the Synod Assembly when invited to participate in a panel offering reflections on experiences and learnings in religious life as they relate to the third major area of synodal focus, Participation.

“What I’m witnessing is a different leadership style, like servant leadership style, where we’re all gathered at the table and participating, contributing. The voices at my table are the voice of a young person, a laywoman, and in my case, an older woman, a religious, and then the others are bishops, all together at the table sharing,” …

Remembering Our Newfoundland Mercy Story 11: Sister Bernard Clune – October 6, 1894

Born in Limerick in 1837, Anne Mary Bridget Clune arrived in St. John’s in the Fall of 1858 to enter the Sisters of Mercy. As a novice she received the name Sister Mary Bernard Xavier but was known for most of her life as Mother Bernard. She spent her whole religious life at Mercy Convent on Military Road.

In the 1860s the sisters at Mercy Convent were responsible not only for Our Lady of Mercy School but also for St. Clair’s Boarding School (housed at Mercy Convent), St. Bridget’s School in the city’s east end and the Petty Harbour foundation, and Mother Bernard entered fully into the call to mission. Her many natural talents and abilities, her educational and cultural background and her keen interest in learning enabled her to fulfill positions of responsibility in the young community, including bursar and mistress of novices in addition to teaching full-time.

In 1881 Mother Bernard was elected superior of Mercy Convent, a position she held for fourteen years. During her tenure, she tirelessly sought out ways to provide the children of Newfoundland with the best possible educational opportunities that would fit them for life. One of her first such ventures was the opening of Angels’ Guardian School at Mercy Convent for children aged three to eight years.

In 1883 at her initiative and with the support of Bishop Thomas Power, the Sisters of Mercy purchased the Little estate in the Waterford Valley. Mother Bernard’s dream was to establish an academic center that would provide access to high quality educational and cultural opportunities for young women all over Newfoundland, and she saw this site as theideal location to make that dream a reality.

To ensure that the sisters would be well prepared to begin this new venture, she and Sister Teresa O’ Halleran sailed to Halifax to look at boarding schools and to learn about new educational practices and techniques.  On August 20, 1884 St. Bride’s Boarding School for Young Ladies at Littledale opened with four boarding students registered. Mother Bernard kept a close eye on St. Bride’s especially in its early years, and she remained interested in all its activities and initiatives throughout her life.

Mother Bernard had many gifts besides her exceptional teaching and administrative talents. She was for many years a soloist in the choir of St. John the Baptist Cathedral and was fluent in several languages. Her death on October 6, 1894 at the age of 57 years was a severe blow to her sisters, especially those at Mercy Convent and Littledale who had lived and worked with her so closely over many years. She was a visionary woman, innovative yet practical, very much in touch with the needs of her times, generous in sharing her talents and fully committed to the mission of Mercy.

The UISG  (International Union Superiors General) and USG (Union of Superiors General) Delegates for the Synod Assembly were invited to form a panel to offer their reflections  on their experiences and learnings in religious life as they relate to the third major area of synodal focus, Participation.

Blessing of Sr Elizabeth Davis as she attends the Synod in Rome

Mercy Day 2023 was more special in St. John’s, NL, as many Sisters of Mercy gathered with parishioners in our Basilica Cathedral to witness a special blessing for Sister Elizabeth Davis as she travels to the Bishops’ Synod in Rome in October 2023.  

At the regular 11:00 a.m. Sunday Liturgy, Pastor Father Cecil Critch welcomed all especially the many Sisters of Mercy and their Associates on Mercy Day, the day in 1827 when Catherine McAuley opened the House of Mercy in Dublin, Ireland.

Congregational Leader Sister Diane Smyth spoke to the parishioners reminding all of the meaning of the Synod and the importance of the time of preparation through prayer and discussions that we, the voice of the people of God, have given to this matter.  She spoke of the significance of this Synod where for the first time not only Bishops will be attending but lay people and those of other faiths who will be voting members.  She repeated Pope Francis’ words of the need for “closeness, compassion and tender love” as we journey together.  Sister Diane congratulated Sister Elizabeth on being invited to participate in the Synod, one of only ten UISG and USG members (five women and five men) to be invited as part of the 21% voters who are not Bishops.  She wished her well and asked God’s blessing on her to speak passionately on our behalf….

El Día de la Misericordia 2023 fue más especial en St. John’s, NL, ya que muchas Hermanas de la Misericordia se reunieron con los feligreses en nuestra Catedral Basílica para presenciar una bendición especial para la Hermana Elizabeth Davis en su viaje al Sínodo de los Obispos en Roma en octubre de 2023.

En la Liturgia dominical regular de las 11:00 a.m., el Párroco Padre Cecil Critch dio la bienvenida a todos especialmente a las muchas Hermanas de la Misericordia y sus Asociados en el Día de la Misericordia, el día en 1827 cuando Catalina McAuley abrió la Casa de la Misericordia en Dublín, Irlanda.

Sr Elizabeth Davis Leaving for the Synod in Rome

Sr. Elizabeth Davis will be leaving for Rome on September 27 to participate in the Synod to be held there during the month of October.  She will begin with a three day retreat with the other delegates in preparation for the opening of the Synod. 

On Sunday morning, September 24,  Elizabeth will receive “a blessing and sending forth” at the 11:00 a.m Mass at the Basilica.  The Mass will be livestreamed at https://www.thebasilica.net/live/ Archbishop Hundt regrets that he will be away that day;  Fr. Critch will be celebrant.

This is a huge moment in the life of the church, so special that women, laity and other non-clerical persons will participate in a Bishops’ Synod.  Preparation during the past two years for a synod on synodality has provided individuals, parish and other groups around the world an opportunity to speak to each other and to the church.  Their (our) input will form the basis of conversations at the synod and recommendations that will come forward to move the church into the future, that all will walk together in God’s name!

We pray for Elizabeth that she will be filled with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, be prophetic and courageous, that she will have the good health and stamina that she will need, that she will have kind and generous people around her, and that she will speak the truth in love! 

We are very proud that Elizabeth was invited to participate in the Synod, a huge privilege and a huge responsibility.  Thank you, Elizabeth, for your courage and generosity! Be blessed; safe travels.  Know that you are surrounded by our love and care.  We are so proud and grateful.

Sunday is a special day for us as we celebrate “Mercy Day”, our special feast.  As Catherine McAuley placed her new foundation, the House of Mercy (1827 in Dublin), under the patronage of Our Lady of Mercy, we place God’s house of mercy, the universal church and the synod under her protection and guidance!

Conversations Online Preparing for the Opening of the Synod

The USIG (International Union of Superiors General) is providing a 3-part online series of input, discussion and sharing on the topics related to Synodality and the October 2023 Synod Assembly that may provide valuable considerations as we move closer to the opening of The Synod.

The Synod Assembly will engage the areas of Communion, Participation and Mission. Each of the 3 online conversations is focussed on one of these themes.

The first conversation is on the first topic of Communion. The session offers: brief overviews about synodality and the Synod, a panel on the first major area, Communion, a beginning experience of Conversation in the Spirit for participants.

Our New Home at the Residence at Littledale

A very significant event for the Sisters of Mercy of Newfoundland took place in October 2020 with the transfer of many of our sisters to their new home at the Residence at Littledale.

On October 7, 2020, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, fourteen sisters from various convents moved to their new home on the third floor of the Residence at Littledale and on October 15, 2020 twenty-three sisters from McAuley Convent took up residence there.

Each group as they arrived gathered in their new chapel to praise and thank God for the many blessings in their former convents while singing “The Suscipe” and the refrain “We Remember your Mercy, we rejoice in your love, renew us in spirit, O Lord”.

On October 17, 2020, Sister Elizabeth Davis, Congregational Leader, gathered with all the sisters in the chapel and welcomed them to their new home.  Several symbols previously used at McAuley Convent were brought into the chapel and placed in appropriate spaces.  In her words during the ritual she noted that “the touchstone of our new home is this chapel, so lovingly built and so lovingly prepared to receive us.  May this chapel dare us to be our best selves”.  She then blessed the altar and ambo and the Blessed Sacrament was brought in to the tabernacle followed by a short period of adoration.  The ritual closed with the singing of the beautiful song “The Circle of Mercy”.

We are blessed in the new residence to be able to occupy the whole third floor, which we endearingly refer to as The Mount.  We  have our own chapel, community room and dining room for our sick and elderly, even though the building is under private ownership.  Naturally we pay for our space and meals but are not responsible as in former days for staffing, maintenance, payroll, laundry or housekeeping.

The journey to the new residence began in 2012 through Congregational Assemblies and Chapters and has now reached completion with the move to the new Residence at Littledale.

The Residence at Littledale

Un acontecimiento muy significativo para las Hermanas de la Misericordia de Terranova tuvo lugar en octubre de 2020 con el traslado de muchas de nuestras hermanas a su nuevo hogar en la Residencia de Littledale.

El 7 de octubre de 2020, fiesta de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, catorce hermanas de varios conventos se trasladaron a su nueva casa en el tercer piso de la Residencia de Littledale y el 15 de octubre de 2020 veintitrés hermanas del Convento McAuley se instalaron allí.

Cada grupo al llegar se reunió en su nueva capilla para alabar y dar gracias a Dios por las muchas bendiciones en sus antiguos conventos mientras cantaban “El Suscipe” y el estribillo “Recordamos tu Misericordia, nos regocijamos en tu amor, renuévanos en espíritu, oh Señor”.

El 17 de octubre de 2020, la Hermana Elizabeth Davis, Líder Congregacional, se reunió con todas las hermanas en la capilla y les dio la bienvenida a su nuevo hogar. Varios símbolos utilizados anteriormente en el Convento McAuley fueron llevados a la capilla y colocados en los espacios apropiados. En sus palabras durante el ritual señaló que “la piedra de toque de nuestro nuevo hogar es esta capilla, tan amorosamente construida y tan amorosamente preparada para recibirnos. Que esta capilla nos anime a ser lo mejor de nosotros mismos”. A continuación, bendijo el altar y el ambón, y el Santísimo Sacramento fue introducido en el sagrario, seguido de un breve período de adoración. El ritual se cerró con el canto de la hermosa canción “El Círculo de la Misericordia”.

En la nueva residencia tenemos la bendición de poder ocupar toda la tercera planta, a la que cariñosamente llamamos El Monte. Tenemos nuestra propia capilla, sala comunitaria y comedor para nuestros enfermos y ancianos, a pesar de que el edificio es de propiedad privada. Naturalmente, pagamos el espacio y las comidas, pero no somos responsables, como antaño, del personal, el mantenimiento, las nóminas, la lavandería o la limpieza.

El camino hacia la nueva residencia comenzó en 2012 a través de Asambleas Congregacionales y Capítulos y ahora ha llegado a su fin con el traslado a la nueva Residencia en Littledale.
