During a prayer service in St Peter’s Basilica on Friday evening, 27 October, at the Day of Prayer, Fasting and Penance for Peace that Pope Francis called for in the context of the devastating wave of violence unfolding in the Holy Land, he prayed:
Mother of God,
“Turn your eyes of mercy towards our human family, which has strayed from the path of peace. ”
“Intercede for our world in such turmoil and great danger.”
“Teach us to cherish and care for life and to repudiate the folly of war, which sows death and eliminates the future.”
“Mother of mercy, we appeal for mercy! Queen of Peace, we appeal for peace! Touch the hearts of those imprisoned by hatred; convert those who fuel and foment conflict.”
“Dry the tears of children, be present to those who are elderly and alone; strengthen the wounded and the sick; protect those forced to leave their lands and their loved ones; console the crestfallen; awaken new hope.”

Durante un servicio de oración en la Basílica de San Pedro el viernes 27 de octubre por la tarde, en la Jornada de Oración, Ayuno y Penitencia por la Paz que el Papa convocó en el contexto de la devastadora ola de violencia que se desarrolla en Tierra Santa:
Madre de Dios,
“Vuelve tus ojos de misericordia hacia nuestra familia humana, que se ha desviado del camino de la paz.”
“Intercede por nuestro mundo sumido en la confusión y en un gran peligro.”
“Enséñanos a apreciar y cuidar la vida y a repudiar la locura de la guerra, que siembra la muerte y elimina el futuro”.
“¡Madre de misericordia, te pedimos misericordia! Reina de la Paz, ¡te pedimos la paz! Toca el corazón de los prisioneros del odio; convierte a los que alimentan y fomentan el conflicto”.
“Seca las lágrimas de los niños, hazte presente a los ancianos y a los que están solos; fortalece a los heridos y a los enfermos; protege a los que se ven obligados a abandonar sus tierras y a sus seres queridos; consuela a los cabizbajos; despierta nuevas esperanzas”.

Pope Francis and Cardinal Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem whom Pope Francis made a cardinal on September 30, called for peace after Hamas’ major attack on Israel and on the declaration of war by Israel this past weekend.
At the end of his Sunday Angelus address, Pope Francis made a plea for peace in that troubled area. He said “Terrorism and war do not bring any solution, but only death and suffering for so many innocent people. War is a failure.” In his statement about the situation, the Patriarch said: “The continuing bloodshed and declaration of war remind us once again of the urgent need to find a lasting and comprehensive solution to the Palestine-Israeli conflict in this land.”
We are asked to pray for peace not only in the Middle East in this time of great conflict but throughout our suffering world and let us remember in our prayer all those on both sides who have been killed, as well as those whose lives have been forever changed by this latest tragic event.
We pray also for the people and country of Afghanistan in the wake of a devastating earthquake this past weekend.

El Papa Francisco y el cardenal Pizzaballa, Patriarca latino de Jerusalén, a quien el Papa Francisco nombró cardenal el 30 de septiembre, hicieron un llamamiento a la paz tras el gran ataque de Hamás contra Israel y la declaración de guerra de Israel el pasado fin de semana.
Al final de su discurso del Ángelus dominical, el Papa Francisco hizo un llamamiento a la paz en esa convulsa zona. Dijo: “El terrorismo y la guerra no traen ninguna solución, sino sólo muerte y sufrimiento para tantos inocentes. La guerra es un fracaso”. En su declaración sobre la situación, el Patriarca dijo: “El continuo derramamiento de sangre y la declaración de guerra nos recuerdan una vez más la urgente necesidad de encontrar una solución duradera y global al conflicto palestino-israelí en esta tierra”.
Se nos pide que recemos por la paz no sólo en Oriente Medio en estos momentos de gran conflicto, sino en todo nuestro sufrido mundo, y recordemos en nuestra oración a todos aquellos de ambos bandos que han perdido la vida, así como a aquellos cuyas vidas han cambiado para siempre a causa de este último trágico suceso.
Rezamos también por el pueblo y el país de Afganistán tras el devastador terremoto del pasado fin de semana.

As we move through this month, let us hold in prayer all who are participating in the Synod in Rome. This is a unique and special moment in the history and life of our Church and there are many different hopes, fears and expectations for its outcome.
It is crucial that we pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit upon each Synod participant and upon the body as a whole. As Pope Francis reminded us “Without prayer, there will be no synod.”

We invite you to pray with us for the people of Morocco and Libya in their time of crisis.
So many lives have been shattered by the deadly earthquake in Morocco and the deadly floods in Libya. Homes have been destroyed, buildings crumbled, communities torn apart, livelihoods destroyed, many thousands of loved ones killed, injured or gone missing, and tens of thousands displaced in these two north African countries by these events.

Pope Francis requests prayer and action for those “for those people who live on the margins of society in subhuman living conditions, that they may not be neglected by institutions and never be cast out.”
He asks “How is it that we allow the ‘throwaway culture,’ in which millions of men and women are worth nothing compared to economic goods, to dominate our lives?” “Please,” the Pope implores, “let’s stop making invisible those who are on the margins of society, whether it’s due to poverty, addictions, mental illness or disability.”

We are all aware of the ways in which extreme weather patterns are impacting our world – devastating wildfires in Maui, widespread flooding in many parts of Asia, severe droughts in the southern US, hundreds of wildfires raging in Canada, extreme “off the charts” heat in many countries around the globe.
What happens in one part of the world affects us all in this new awareness of our interconnectedness as one global family.
Let us hold in prayer all our sisters and brothers whose lives, properties and livelihoods have been forever changed by these climate disasters.
