Human Rights Day is observed each year on December 10. It commemorates the anniversary of one of the world’s most groundbreaking global pledges – the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, signed on December 10, 1948.
This Declaration ensures the inalienable rights of every person, regardless of color, creed, origin, sex, language. The theme for 2024, Our Right, Our Future, Right Now, is a call to acknowledge the importance of human rights in our everyday lives as sisters and brothers in the human family.

The Holy Year, Year of Jubilee opens officially on December 24, 2024 with a Mass presided over by Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Square. The rite of the Opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica follows the Mass.
The theme of this special year is Pilgrims of Hope. This is a year of pilgrimage and thousands are expected to visit Rome during the year.
On December 26 Pope Francis will open a Holy Door at Rome’s Rebebbia Prison. He has chosen to do this as a sign of hope and a renewed sense of confidence for prisoners around the world.
Over the next couple of weeks three other Holy Doors will be opened – those of the other three major papal basilicas – St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major and St. Paul’s Outside the Walls. This ceremonious opening of doors symbolizes the spiritual journey from sin to grace.
Most of the religious events of the year of Jubilee will take place at St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican and St. Peter’s Square. Other activities such as concerts, exhibitions and cultural performances will take place at different venues in Rome and the surrounding area. Dioceses around the world will be holding events to celebrate this special year.

El Año Santo, Año Jubilar, se abre oficialmente el 24 de diciembre de 2024 con una Misa presidida por el Papa Francisco en la Plaza de San Pedro. El rito de la Apertura de la Puerta Santa de la Basílica de San Pedro sigue a la Misa.
El tema de este año especial es Peregrinos de esperanza. Este es un año de peregrinación y se espera que miles de personas visiten Roma durante el año.

The eighth World Day of the Poor will be observed throughout the global Church on Sunday, November 17. This year’s theme is taken from Sirach 21 “The prayer of the poor rises up to God.”
As has become customary, Pope Francis will celebrate World Day of the Poor with some of the poor people of Rome, who will join him for lunch after he has presided over mass.
In his message for the 2024 World Day of the Poor, Pope Francis noted that war-driven “bad politics” generates new poverty and innocent victims. He urged everyone to pray with and for the poor, and highlighted that volunteers continue to devote themselves to serving the poorest in our cities, embodying God’s response to the cries of those in need.

La octava Jornada Mundial de los Pobres se celebrará en toda la Iglesia el domingo 17 de noviembre.El tema de este año está tomado del Eclesiástico 21 «La oración de los pobres sube hasta Dios».
Como viene siendo habitual, el Papa Francisco celebrará la Jornada Mundial de los Pobres con algunos de los pobres de Roma, que se reunirán con él para almorzar después de que haya presidido la misa.
En su mensaje para la Jornada Mundial de los Pobres 2024, el Papa Francisco señaló que la «mala política» impulsada por la guerra genera nueva pobreza y víctimas inocentes. On November 11, 1841 Catherine McAuley, our beloved foundress, died at Baggot Street in Dublin. Among those present at her deathbed was our Newfoundland foundress, Francis Creedon, who had been professed in August of that year.

Monday November 11 is the 183rd anniversary of the death of Catherine McAuley. Since 1841 thousands of women have followed in her footsteps and her charism of Mercy lives on in the many women and men who continue the works of Mercy in over thirty countries. We thank God for the life and ministry of this great woman.
November 11 is also known as Remembrance Day, marking the anniversary of the official end of World War 1 on November 11, 1918. The chief symbol of Remembrance Day is the poppy, made famous by John McCrae in his poem In Flanders Fields.
This year November 11 is particularly significant in our province as it is the centennial year of the Newfoundland War Memorial in
St. John’s, erected in 1924. On July 1, 2024 the remains of an unknown Newfoundland soldier were reinterred in a custom-designed tomb at the War Memorial in a special ceremony attended by thousands of citizens.
As we celebrate this day of remembrance we pay tribute to all those who have died in wars and all who are struggling to keep peace in our world.
El lunes 11 de noviembre se cumple el 183 aniversario de la muerte de Catalina McAuley.Desde 1841, miles de mujeres han seguido sus pasos y su carisma de Misericordia sigue vivo en las muchas mujeres y hombres que continúan las obras de Misericordia en más de treinta países.Damos gracias a Dios por la vida y el ministerio de esta gran mujer.
El 11 de noviembre es también conocido como el Día del Recuerdo, que marca el aniversario del final oficial de la Primera Guerra Mundial, el 11 de noviembre de 1918. El símbolo principal del Día del Recuerdo es la amapola, que John McCrae hizo famosa en su poema In Flanders Fields.

World Mission Sunday is celebrated on the second to last Sunday of October. This year it is marked on October 20th.
In his message, on this year’s theme ‘Go and invite everyone to the banquet (cf. Mt 22:9)’, Pope Francis reminds us that we are each called “to take part in this universal mission by offering his or her own witness to the Gospel in every context, so that the whole Church can continually go forth with her Lord and Master to the “crossroads” of today’s world.”

“Last month I attended the Pontifical Missions Conference and AGM which was held at Queen of Apostles Renewal Centre in Mississauga from Sept 9-12, 2024. At the conference we welcomed our new National Director Bishop John Boissoneau and bid farewell to Father Alex Osie, C.S.Sp who has held that position for the past 12 years.
On October 20, 2024, Catholics all over the world will celebrate World Mission Sunday. On that day we are asked to pray and give financial support to continue the missionary work of the Church which is evangelization. As the Diocesan Director for the Pontifical Mission Societies, I ask you to be cognizant of this request and to pray and give to the collection if you are able. Money is always needed to carry out the various projects in missionary countries and it was noted that last year’s collection was down by 35%.
Your gift of prayer and financial assistance on World Mission Sunday helps the Church in the missions in Africa, Asia, Northern Canada, the Pacific Islands and Latin America. It assists people in remote villages, towns and cities through the witness and work of missionaries and helps construct meeting places such as chapels and classrooms for liturgies, workshops and teaching.
The emphasis from Bishop Boissoneau and Father Alex’s talks during the conference was on prayer for the missions and returning to the roots of our charism whose origins were based on prayer and that our Church exists for evangelization. All at the conference were very pleased to know we have started the Living Rosary Apostolate in the Basilica Parish and have a total of 40 parishioners participating presently reciting one assigned decade daily. The 20 decades of the Rosary are said twice a day with our first intention being for the missions and then our own intentions. My main work for the Pontifical Mission Society is to remind Parish Priests in the Archdiocese of the importance of World Mission Sunday, provide them with blurbs for their bulletins for each Sunday in October, offer to speak to any parish groups or at liturgies, distribute coin boxes when requested and attend the yearly conference and AGM. My years in Peru and the similar work our sisters do in that country provide a great experience for me to bring to this ministry.”

La Jornada Mundial de las Misiones se celebra el penúltimo domingo de octubre. Este año se celebra el 20 de octubre.
En su mensaje, sobre el tema de este año «Id e invitad a todos al banquete (cf. Mt 22,9)», el Papa Francisco nos recuerda que cada uno de nosotros está llamado «a participar en esta misión universal ofreciendo su propio testimonio del Evangelio en cada contexto, para que toda la Iglesia pueda salir continuamente con su Señor y Maestro a las “encrucijadas” del mundo de hoy.»
La Hna. Rosemary, Directora Diocesana de las Obras Misionales Pontificias en Terranova, nos informa sobre su asistencia a la reciente Conferencia y Asamblea General de las Misiones Pontificias.
«El mes pasado asistí a la Conferencia Pontificia de Misiones y a la Asamblea General que se celebró en el Centro de Renovación Reina de los Apóstoles en Mississauga del 9 al 12 de septiembre de 2024. En la conferencia dimos la bienvenida a nuestro nuevo Director Nacional, el Obispo John Boissoneau, y despedimos al Padre Alex Osie, C.S.Sp, que ha ocupado ese cargo durante los últimos 12 años.
El 20 de octubre de 2024, los católicos de todo el mundo celebrarán la Jornada Mundial de las Misiones. Ese día se nos pide rezar y dar apoyo financiero para continuar la labor misionera de la Iglesia que es la evangelización. Como Director Diocesano de las Obras Misionales Pontificias, les pido que sean conscientes de esta petición y que recen y den para la colecta si pueden. Siempre se necesita dinero para llevar a cabo los diversos proyectos en los países misioneros y se ha observado que la colecta del año pasado disminuyó un 35%.
Su donativo de oración y ayuda económica en la Jornada Misionera Mundial ayuda a la Iglesia en las misiones de África, Asia, Norte de Canadá, Islas del Pacífico y América Latina. Ayuda a la gente de aldeas, pueblos y ciudades remotas a través del testimonio y el trabajo de los misioneros y contribuye a la construcción de lugares de encuentro como capillas y aulas para liturgias, talleres y enseñanza.

On October 16 the parish of St. Patrick’s, Brigus, C.B. celebrated its 200th anniversary. A Eucharistic celebration was presided over by the bishop of Grand Falls, Bishop Tony Daniels. Frs. Al Credo, (Parish Priest), Fr. Barker, and the pastor of Northern Bay were also present along with over a hundred of the parishioners and guests. The leadership team and some Sisters of Mercy who had lived, taught and ministered in Brigus and area were present for the Celebration.

In his homily Bishop Daniels called us to be a community of disciples of Jesus, pilgrims walking together and connection with the lives of each other. After the Mass the group went to the former school building where the choice of a chicken or roast beef dinner was deliciously prepared and catered by Skipper Ben’s Restaurant, Cupids. There were at least 150 people present. Many greetings and presentations were brought to the parish. Sr. Diane brought greetings on behalf of the Sisters of Mercy.

I want to say thank you for this opportunity to join you as you celebrate 200 years of your parish. I express congratulations and gratitude on behalf of all the Sisters of Mercy, many of whom have lived and worked in Brigus and the area round Brigus. Some of these sisters are here this evening to celebrate with you.
The first Catholic School in Brigus was a one-room school set up in 1805 in the home of Robin Power who was the teacher. In 1826 that school expanded and eventually moved to the sacristy of the newly constructed church building.
In 1860 Bishop Mullock consulted the people of the growing parish regarding the establishment of a school and convent in Brigus. In their enthusiasm the people raised 1,000 in a week and construction was begun on St. Joseph’s Convent.
(As an aside, I would like to say: enthusiasm for construction is well alive in Brigus as evident the new home construction and the world-wind building and TV -Rock Solid Builds- show of Randy Spracklin and team!)

On September 11, 1861 the first four Sisters of Mercy arrived in Brigus from the motherhouse, Mercy Convent, Military Road in St. John’s, accompanied by Sr. M. Francis Zavier Bernard,(Limerick) Head of the Sisters of Mercy, and M. Baptist Tarahan. The four pioneer sisters who would remain in Brigus were Sr. Mary of the Angels Banks (limerick) Sr. M. de Chantal O’Keefe (Cork), Sr. M. Gonzaga Coady, St. John’s and postulant Mary Barron (Wexford) who had entered the convent in St. John’s just the day before! She made her novitiate and profession in Brigus, receiving the name of Sr. M. Joseph Theresa. All four of these sisters were under 26 years of age. These young women and other sisters who came over the years, had been well educated for their time and brought music, drama, art and needlework in addition to the basic school subjects.
In her book, Weavers of the Tapestry, Sr. Katherine Bellamy outlines the high level of education, culture, and academic achievement of the people of Brigus, and others who even came by train to attend classes, music lessons, business courses and teacher training. Brigus was and is a centre of academic and artistic excellence! Brigus is a treasure tucked away in the island piece of our province.
There are no Sisters of Mercy living in the Conception Bay area now. But the Sisters of Mercy have a presence still in the burial places of Brigus and Conception Harbour. Five sisters are buried in Brigus: S. Mary of the Angels Banks, Sr. M. Gonzaga Coady, two of the first sisters here, Sr. M. Ultan Mullowney, Sr. M. Veronica Crawley and Sr. M. Berchmans Meehan.
The Sisters of Mercy are delighted to be part of the story of Brigus and to be weavers of the beautiful tapestry of Brigus! We congratulate this parish of St. Patrick’s and the faithful people who built up the faith and culture of this place in the past two hundred years and continue to do so into the future.
May our loving God remain deep in the hearts and spirits of people, calling forth every goodness: peace, justice, love for self, each other, God and Earth, our common home. El 16 de octubre, la parroquia de San Patricio de Brigus, C.B. celebró su 200 aniversario. Una celebración eucarística fue presidida por el obispo de Grand Falls, Mons. Tony Daniels. Los Padres Al Credo (párroco), Barker y el párroco de Northern Bay también estuvieron presentes junto con más de un centenar de feligreses e invitados. El equipo directivo y algunas Hermanas de la Misericordia que habían vivido, enseñado y ejercido su ministerio en Brigus y alrededores estuvieron presentes en la Celebración.
En su homilía el Obispo Daniels nos llamó a ser una comunidad de discípulos de Jesús, peregrinos caminando juntos y conectados con la vida de los demás. Después de la misa, el grupo se dirigió al edificio de la antigua escuela, donde se ofreció una deliciosa cena a elegir entre pollo o rosbif, preparada por el restaurante Skipper Ben’s, Cupids. Asistieron al menos 150 personas. Se trajeron muchos saludos y presentaciones a la parroquia. La Hermana Diane trajo saludos en nombre de las Hermanas de la Misericordia.

Quiero darles las gracias por esta oportunidad de unirme a ustedes en la celebración de los 200 años de su parroquia. Expreso mis felicitaciones y gratitud en nombre de todas las Hermanas de la Misericordia, muchas de las cuales han vivido y trabajado en Brigus y sus alrededores. Algunas de estas hermanas están aquí esta tarde para celebrarlo con vosotros.
La primera escuela católica de Brigus fue una escuela de una sola aula creada en 1805 en casa de Robin Power, que era el maestro. En 1826 la escuela se amplió y finalmente se trasladó a la sacristía de la iglesia recién construida.
En 1860, el obispo Mullock consultó a los habitantes de la creciente parroquia sobre la creación de una escuela y un convento en Brigus. En su entusiasmo, la gente recaudó 1.000 en una semana y se inició la construcción del convento de San José.
(Como apunte, me gustaría decir: ¡el entusiasmo por la construcción está muy vivo en Brigus, como lo demuestra la construcción de nuevas viviendas y el espectáculo de construcción y televisión -Rock Solid Builds- de Randy Spracklin y su equipo).
l 11 de septiembre de 1861 las cuatro primeras Hermanas de la Misericordia llegaron a Brigus desde la casa madre, el Convento de la Misericordia, Military Road en St. John’s, acompañadas por la Hna. M. Francis Zavier Bernard,(Limerick) Directora de las Hermanas de la Misericordia, y M. Baptist Tarahan. Las cuatro hermanas pioneras que permanecerían en Brigus fueron la Hna. Mary of the Angels Banks (Limerick), la Hna. M. de Chantal O’Keefe (Cork), la Hna. M. Gonzaga Coady, St. John’s y la postulante Mary Barron (Wexford), que había entrado en el convento de St. Hizo su noviciado y profesión en Brigus, recibiendo el nombre de Sor M. Joseph Theresa. Las cuatro hermanas tenían menos de 26 años. Estas jóvenes y otras hermanas que vinieron a lo largo de los años, habían recibido una buena educación para su época y aportaron música, teatro, arte y labores de aguja, además de las materias escolares básicas.

En su libro Weavers of the Tapestry (Tejedoras del tapiz), la hermana Katherine Bellamy describe el alto nivel de educación, cultura y logros académicos de la gente de Brigus, y de otros que incluso venían en tren para asistir a clases, lecciones de música, cursos de negocios y formación de profesores. Brigus era y es un centro de excelencia académica y artística. Brigus es un tesoro escondido en el pedazo de isla de nuestra provincia.
Ahora no hay Hermanas de la Misericordia viviendo en la zona de Conception Bay. Pero las Hermanas de la Misericordia siguen presentes en los lugares de enterramiento de Brigus y Conception Harbour. Cinco hermanas están enterradas en Brigus: Sor María de los Ángeles Banks, Sor M. Gonzaga Coady, dos de las primeras hermanas aquí, Sor M. Ultan Mullowney, Sor M. Veronica Crawley y Sor M. Berchmans Meehan.
Las Hermanas de la Misericordia están encantadas de formar parte de la historia de Brigus y de ser tejedoras del hermoso tapiz de Brigus. Felicitamos a esta parroquia de San Patricio y a las personas fieles que construyeron la fe y la cultura de este lugar en los últimos doscientos años y continúan haciéndolo en el futuro.

Established in 1992 by the World Federationof Mental Health, World Mental Health Day is celebrated annually on October 10. This year’s theme “It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health inthe Workplace” highlights the vital connection between mental health and work.
The theme underscores the critical importance of mental health inprofessional settings and reminds us that discrimination, stigma, harassment, and poor working conditions can pose significant risks to mental health and overall quality of lifeas well as to productivity at work.
Let us be mindful of those who work among us and for us, respecting their dignity and appreciating their service.
Establecido en 1992 por la Federación Mundial de Salud Mental, el Día Mundial de la Salud Mental se celebra anualmente el 10 de octubre. El tema de este año, «Es hora de dar prioridad a la salud mental en el lugar de trabajo», pone de relieve la conexión vital entre la salud mental y el trabajo.
