The 2024 Olympic Games are taking place in Paris from July 26 to August 11. In 1992 the International Olympic Committee (IOC) revived an ancient tradition called The Olympic Truce and in 1993 the United Nations gave its full support to the concept by adopting a resolution entitled “Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal.”
The tradition of the Olympic Truce began in ancient Greece in the ninth century BC through a treaty signed by three Greek city states which were almost constantly at war. The Truce allowed safe participation for all athletes and spectators during the Olympic Games. In our current reality in society, politics and sport, revival of this tradition aims to provide a halt to war and a return to safety for all peoples around the world.
In speaking in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, July 21 Pope Francis made an appeal for warring countries to respond to the call of this Truce: “I hope that this event can be a sign of the inclusive world we want to build and that the athletes with their sporting testimony, may be messengers of peace and valuable models for the young.”
Join us in prayer that Pope Francis’ appeal may be heard, and that peace and goodwill will characterize the Olympic Games of 2024.
You might like to use the following prayer proposed by the Council of Christian Churches in France (CECEF) with the desire that everyone can take it as their own.
“God, source of true joy, in your Son Jesus Christ you have called all nations to form a people of praise to celebrate you. Let us lead the race to the end.
God who is God, look now on France, which will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Grant that they may organize this event in joy, peace and fraternity.
Pour out your Holy Spirit on all those who are working for the realization of the games, on all the people who will come from the four corners of the Earth and on the athletes.
Grant them the virtue necessary to give the best of themselves. May athletes get the support – in times of joy and trial, of successes and failures – from their loved ones, their coaches and our prayers.
Help the French people, Lord, as they welcome all those who have come from all over the world.
Brought together in the common passion for sport with the motto of the Olympic Games “faster, higher, stronger – together”, let them together convey your love for every human being.

Los Juegos Olímpicos de 2024 se celebrarán en París del 26 de julio al 11 de agosto. En 1992 el Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI) revivió una antigua tradición llamada La Tregua Olímpica y en 1993 las Naciones Unidas dieron su pleno apoyo al concepto adoptando una resolución titulada «Construir un mundo pacífico y mejor mediante el deporte y el ideal olímpico».
La tradición de la Tregua Olímpica comenzó en la antigua Grecia en el siglo IX a.C. mediante un tratado firmado por tres ciudades-estado griegas que estaban casi constantemente en guerra. La Tregua permitía la participación segura de todos los atletas y espectadores durante los Juegos Olímpicos. En la realidad actual de la sociedad, la política y el deporte, la recuperación de esta tradición pretende poner fin a la guerra y devolver la seguridad a todos los pueblos del mundo.
Al hablar en la Plaza de San Pedro el domingo 21 de julio, el Papa Francisco hizo un llamamiento para que los países en guerra respondan a la llamada de esta Tregua: «Espero que este evento pueda ser un signo del mundo inclusivo que queremos construir y que los atletas, con su testimonio deportivo, puedan ser mensajeros de paz y modelos valiosos para los jóvenes.»
Únete a nosotros en la oración para que el llamamiento del Papa Francisco sea escuchado, y para que la paz y la buena voluntad caractericen los Juegos Olímpicos de 2024.
Puede utilizar la siguiente oración propuesta por el Consejo de las Iglesias Cristianas de Francia (CECEF) con el deseo de que cada uno pueda hacerla suya.
«Dios, fuente de la verdadera alegría, en tu Hijo Jesucristo has llamado a todas las naciones a formar un pueblo de alabanza para celebrarte. Llevemos la carrera hasta el final.
Dios que eres Dios, mira ahora a Francia, que acogerá los Juegos Olímpicos y Paralímpicos. Haz que organicen este acontecimiento en la alegría, la paz y la fraternidad.
Derrama tu Espíritu Santo sobre todos los que trabajan para la realización de los juegos, sobre todas las personas que vendrán de los cuatro puntos cardinales y sobre los atletas.
Concédeles la virtud necesaria para dar lo mejor de sí mismos. Que los atletas reciban el apoyo -en los momentos de alegría y de prueba, de éxitos y de fracasos- de sus seres queridos, de sus entrenadores y de nuestras oraciones.
Ayuda, Señor, al pueblo francés a acoger a todos los que han venido del mundo entero.
Reunidos en la pasión común por el deporte con el lema de los Juegos Olímpicos «más rápido, más alto, más fuerte – juntos», haz que juntos transmitan tu amor por cada ser humano.
