Mary Hoey was born in November of 1874, the oldest of twelve children. She was educated by the Sisters of St. Louis in her home town of Carrick McCross, County Monaghan. It was here at school that she met a Newfoundland girl, Agatha Kennedy, who had been sent to Ireland by her parents to continue her studies. The two developed a bond of friendship that lasted throughout the course of their lives.

After her studies Agatha returned to Newfoundland and entered the Sisters of Mercy in Conception Harbour in August of 1892.

In 1894 Mary Hoey left Ireland for the Newfoundland mission. She became a postulant at Immaculate Conception Convent in Conception Harbour on June 21 and was received into the novitiate as Sister Mary Brigid on November 21. On that same day

her friend Agatha, now Sister Mary Gertrude, made her profession of vows. Sister Mary Brigid spent twenty-two years in Conception Harbour, teaching in the school, visiting the sick in the parish and serving as superior for several years.

In 1916 at Amalgamation, Sister M. Brigid was appointed to the General Council of the newly formed Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of Newfoundland, and the following year went as superior of the new Mercy foundation on the west coast, St. Mary’s on the Humber in Petries (Curling). In 1919 she went to Burin as superior of St. Anne’s Convent and at the expiration of her term of office, she became a member

of St. Joseph’s Convent community at Hoylestown in the city’s east end. She remained at St. Joseph’s for the next thirty-three years. When she was no longer able to continue teaching, she devoted herself to visitation of the sick in their homes and at the General Hospital, becoming a familiar figure throughout the Hoylestown area.

Sister M. Brigid died at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital on August 23, 1957, having lived as a Sister of Mercy in Newfoundland for sixty-three years and having ministered in all three dioceses.

Sister Mary Joseph Rawlins was born in St. John’s in 1846. As a child she attended Our Lady of Mercy School and also spent a short time at St. Clair’s Boarding School, which was attached to the school, and which functioned from 1861 to 1881. In 1863 at the age of seventeen she entered Mercy Convent as a postulant.

During her eight years at Mercy Convent, Sister Mary Joseph studied music under the direction of Professor Thomas Mullock, brother of Bishop Mullock and the first organist at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. She was the aunt of Sister M. Aloysius Rawlins who played such a significant role in the early days of St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital.

In 1871 Sister Mary Joseph was transferred to St. Ann’s Convent in Burin where she taught music to children and adults from Burin and the surrounding area. Though she had studied music she had little experience in teaching it, but her time in Burin gave her plenty of opportunity to hone her skill. Sister Kathrine Bellamy in Weavers of the Tapestry, a history of the Mercy Sisters in Newfoundland and Labrador, states that “the parish choir was her biggest challenge and her greatest joy.” In 1879 as superior of St. Ann’s, Sister M. Joseph organized the construction of a new convent and a three-room school in a central location in Burin.

By 1917 Sister M. Joseph’s deteriorating health forced her to leave her beloved teaching ministry. Her good friend, Sister M. Bridget O’Connor who had been in Burin with her and who was now Superior General of the newly formed Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of Newfoundland, urged her to return to St. John’s where she could get the best medical attention. However, Sister M. Joseph was reluctant to leave Burin, which had been her home for nearly fifty years and where she had many dear friends and cherished memories.

On August 17, 1918 when the Burin Sisters went to St. John’s for their annual retreat, Sister Margaret Mary St. John stayed behind to care for Sister M. Joseph. During Evening Prayer on August 19, Sister M. Joseph was stricken with severe paralysis. Later that night when her condition became more critical, Sister Margaret Mary rang the big convent bell to get assistance from the community. The women of Burin responded immediately, but Sister M. Joseph was beyond help and died the following day. She was the last sister to be buried in the Sisters’ plot in Burin.

On Sunday, 11 August 2024, many of the parishioners of Sacred Heart Parish, Marystown, came to bid farewell of Sr. Dorothy Willcott who has lived and ministered among them since 2016. While this was a farewell to Dorothy in Marystown, it was also a farewell to the Sisters of Mercy in the Burin Peninsula.

Two of the three priests who live in Marystown, Fathers Emanuel Quagraine and Emmanuel Iroulor, and serve the peninsula concelebrated Mass. Mr. Eric Short, Chair of the parish council spoke of the occasion and the historic moment when Dorothy would leave. He acknowledged the many years of the presence of the Sisters and expressed deep loss in the ending of an important part in the life of the community and the church. He invited Sr. Diane to address the people (text linked here). He then gave a heartfelt tribute to Dorothy and presented her with a gift. All were invited to gather for a light lunch. Fr. Emmanuel then invited the Sisters present to surround Dorothy at the front of the church and invited all present to extend hands as he spoke beautiful words of blessing.

The lunch was a feast of plenty with sandwiches, cookies, cupcakes and a beautiful cake of good wishes. Again Mr. Short said a few words and invited others present to speak. The gathering was warm and friendly and one could sense the feelings of loss, yet much gratitude.
