“International Day of Older Persons” on 1 October is intended to raise public awareness about the opportunities and challenges presented to seniors and to celebrate and acknowledge their place in society.
Seventy-five years ago, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the landmark Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This year’s theme, “Fulfilling the Promises of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for Older Persons: Across Generations”, highlights the importance of protecting these rights for older persons.
Over the next 50 years, the number of older persons in the world will grow from about 600 million to almost 2 billion. Today, one person in ten is aged 60 or over – by 2050, this will be one person in five, and by 2150, one in three. Such a major demographic change presents huge challenges.
In 2022, during his General Audiences, Pope Francis conducted a catechesis series on many aspects of the meaning and value of older age to help us all recognise the dignity of older persons and the gift they are to society.
In the final catechesis in the series (Cathechesis 12), Pope Francis told us:
“Old age comes for everyone. And treat the elderly today as you would wish to be treated in your old age. They are the memory of the family, the memory of humanity, the memory of the country. Protect the elderly, who are wisdom. May the Lord grant the elderly who are part of the Church the generosity of this invocation and of this provocation.”

This year Pope Francis has chosen “Free to choose whether to migrate or to stay” as the focus for this day. In so doing, the Pope is proposing a renewed reflection on the right of people to be able to remain in their own land in peace and dignity – in other words, the right not to migrate. While this right precedes and is broader than the right to migrate, it is not yet enshrined in international law.
